Australia generates millions of tonnes of organic waste every year. When that waste ends up in landfill, it breaks down to produce methane — a greenhouse gas far more potent than CO₂. Meanwhile, conventional soap relies on palm oil, a commodity linked to the destruction of rainforests and the habitats of endangered species. And most synthetic soaps? They leave behind chemicals that harm our waterways long after they've washed down the drain.
We knew there had to be a better way.
Meet Hermetia illucens — the Black Soldier Fly. These remarkable insects are nature's recyclers. Their larvae consume organic waste at an extraordinary rate, converting it into two valuable outputs: protein-rich biomass (used as sustainable animal feed) and a clean, nourishing oil.
That oil is the heart of fifoam. Farmed right here in Australia, using waste that would otherwise end up in landfill, Black Soldier Fly oil is a genuinely circular ingredient — one that gives back more than it takes. No deforestation. No imported palm oil. No compromise.
fifoam exists to prove that everyday products can be better — for your skin and for the planet. We make 100% natural, palm oil-free soap that's gentle enough for sensitive skin and tough enough on the environmental problems that inspired it. Every bar you buy diverts organic waste from landfill and supports a local, circular economy.
fifoam is proudly made in Albany, WA, by Sea Dragon Botanicals Pty Ltd. We source Australian ingredients and work with Australian waste streams, keeping our footprint local and our supply chain transparent. When you choose fifoam, you're supporting Australian innovation and a cleaner future for our country's land and waterways.
fifoam soaps are stocked at some of Australia's most respected zero-waste retailers — Urban Revolution, Replenish Kalamunda, and Wasteless Pantry — and our customers rate us 4.92 stars on average. We're proud of that trust, and we work every day to deserve it.
"Finally a soap that does what it says — natural, effective, and I love knowing it's made sustainably right here in Australia."
Join the growing community of Australians choosing soap that's better for skin, better for the planet, and made with genuine purpose.
Sea Dragon Botanicals, is a specialised contract manufacturer of soap and skincare based in Albany on the south coast of Western Australia. It is a small, family business owned by Jasper Trendall and Lindy Leggett. It was started 1995 and we have been manufacturing soap and skincare for almost 30 years. There isn't really any substitute for hands-on experience and the quality of our products reflects a process of continuing improvement and evolution over time.
In 2021 we were asked by an innovative insect farming company in Perth (Future Green Solutions - now Arvela) if there might be a way to use the oil that they were harvesting from farmed Black Soldier Fly Larvae in personal care products like skincare and soap. The oil was a natural fit for soap.
That was the beginning of fifoam - a soap that is made using oil harvested from farmed insects. The quality of the soap was a real surprise. Insect oil makes very high quality soap. The fact that it is so sustainable is an added bonus. The products have been developed and tested with consumers over four years and the feedback has been exceptional.
It is such a simple thing. Bugs to bubbles. The insects convert organic waste into protein, oil and fertiliser and the oil is used to make soap.
It is a great example of environmental sustainability that involves no compromise in quality or function. You can use a better soap and help make the planet cleaner in two ways. Less organic waste buried in landfill and a new kind of soap that makes cleaning easy and affordable.
